Flute Teacher

Born in Kuala Lumpur yet raised in Penang, Dima Naquira Mohd Rafi
despised the idea of music when forced to attend piano classes like many
others at the tender age of 4 years old. However, when she was introduced
to the flute at the age of 13 in the St George’s Girls School Band, something
clicked and she never looked back.
She moved back to Kuala Lumpur in 2006 to pursue a law degree in the
University of Malaya (UM). Whilst obtaining her LL.B, she never stopped
performing and learning the flute. She began teaching music to support her
music classes and exams. Eventually the effort paid off as she completed her
ABRSM Grade 8 in Flute Practical in 2012 and she was conferred the
Associate of Trinity College (ATCL) Diploma in Flute Recital in 2013.
In her years in UM, whilst reading law as well as working as a Project
Assistant in the Cultural Centre, she was the principal flute player in several
orchestras in and out of the University and performed in numerous
performances at the State and National level. Dima was also an avid
performer of Keroncong music, and recorded a 12 track album under Klasik
Nasional with Keroncong de Malaya.
While performing and teaching remained as constants, Dima’s career in the
field of music centred around management due to her legal background. She
was the orchestra manager of the UM Symphony Orchestra between
2012-2014 and was the manager of a music centre between 2015-2018. She
was also a key member of the team that pioneered the Foundation Studies in
Performing Arts programme in the University of Malaya in 2013.
To this day Dima has never stopped developing her flute playing, and is
currently under the tutelage of Principal Flutist of the National Symphony
Orchestra, Ms Keiko Nakagawa.
